Oakland has just become the first city in the Nation to legalize the wholesale of Marijuana, but not amid controversy, although it may not be the kind of controversy you would expect.
The fight in the East is not the usual NIMBY fight. It's more of a "It's not FAIR!" complaint. The little growers don't think it's fair and are nervous that four big growers will shut them all out.
Oakland City Council, who voted 5-2 to approve the plan disagrees, arguing the proposal, "could turn Oakland into the Silicon Valley of pot, create jobs and generate new tax revenues."
Councilmember Larry Reid, co-author of the cultivation ordinance, said,
"I disagree with these folks that say it will be like McDonald's. If I was a patient, I would want to make sure that the medicine I buy and consume was grown in a safe environment. These folks that are out there growing on their own, you don't know what you are getting. That's why we will have some sort of product testing."
Hey Larry, If you need anyone to help you out with that product testing, the BTA always accepts donations and are willing volunteers.
